Solarpunk: For Hopeful Speculative Writing

Join the Alaska Writers Guild for the free “Solarpunk: For Hopeful Speculative Writing” workshop with Adrienne Canino on Saturday, Jan. 17, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

You likely know cyber punk, but are you familiar with solar punk? Hopepunk? Have you tried writing any “punk” lately? Solarpunk is the creative movement to speculate and actively seek out hopeful, successful futures that bring our communities closer to peaceful, ecologically balanced, and humane futures. It can also be summarized as the opposite of dystopian work. It's on the rise as a subgenre in the speculative fiction world, with recent works breaking into mainstream popularity, like “A Psalm for the Wild-Built,” by Becky Chambers, “Binti” by Nnedi Okorafor, and “An Annual Migration of Clouds,” by Premee Mohamed.

In a relaxed, one-hour workshop, get to know this sub-genre of speculative fiction, including recently published examples and how to find more, and then practice writing it with one to three generative writing prompts/sprints.

Let's use our strength—imagination and creativity—to paint hopefully, bright portraits of the future.
